![]() Phosphorus is the key nutrient that feeds algae growth. The Lake Ketchum water quality problems are caused by high levels of phosphorus. However, work is needed each year to ensure that Lake Ketchum remains healthy. The Lake is once again healthy allowing people to swim, play, and boat in the lake and are evident for all to see. ![]() Specifically, phosphorus levels have dramatically decreased, algae growth has been substantially reduced, and the water is signifciantly clearer. Through an ongoing collaboration between Snohomish County and the Lake Ketchum community, the lake water quality has been succesfully restored. The algae blooms, caused by too much phosphorus in the lake, were also frequently toxic, threatening the health of people and pets that used the lake. These algae blooms formed unsightly scums on the lake surface that severely impaired use and enjoyment of the lake. However, for many years, Lake Ketchum suffered from thick growths of blue-green algae. Historically, it was the drinking water supply for the City of Stanwood. The lake supports swimming, fishing, boating, aesthetic enjoyment, and wildlife habitat. “Cat People: What Dr.Lake Ketchum is a 26-acre public lake located in northwest Snohomish County two miles north of the City of Stanwood. This essay is not required and students will also have a chance to write and discuss their writing in in-class exercises. We often learn vivid lessons when we are stretched in some way. If you would like to submit a piece but are stumped about a subject, I suggest that you write about a moment or period in your life when you experienced genuine fear and as a result experienced some insight. This essay can be on any subject and can fall into any sub-genre-memoir, journalism, profile, travel essay, etc. Students are invited to write a short (3-6 pages, double spaced) essay for the class to workshop. Those in bold come from the book, those in plain text are available for download in the Readings section of the site. On the course schedule page you will find a list of all of our readings. The readings for the course will be found in our one course book, The Best American Essays, 2008, edited by Adam Gopnik, or here on this website. Since I will ask you to revisit many of the essays with specific prompts in mind, and since we will also workshop student pieces that will only become available near the start of the class, students should also plan on 1-2 hours of reading before each class during the week. Before the first day of class students must read all the assigned essays. ![]() In order to do so much in a short space of time, everyone will need to prepare considerably. We will discuss almost 20 accomplished essays, try out some of their techniques in in-class exercises, and workshop short pieces of your own writing. ![]() This is an intensive seminar, and we will do a lot in one week.
